A wonderful way to wake-up November 13, 2009 Bessiebean (York) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I love this wake-up light. I bought it a few weeks ago and it has transformed my morning wake-up. I'd been feeling tired in the mornings and finding it difficult to wake. I wasn' feeling refreshed after my sleep. Now with the wake-up light, every day is like waking up on a sunny day. It's fabulous.
The lamp is sleek and looks nice and it's easy to set the alarm and brightness preferences. There is a choice of back up sounds in case the light doesn't wake you. I have woken everyday in the bathed in the gentle light of the lamp and then I have chosen to wake for the the sound of the gentle birdsong before rising. It's just such a nice thing to do. It makes wibnter mornings feel like summer ones. If you are thinking of buying a dawn-simulator alarm, I really recommend this one. Waking in the morning is a joy since I got this lamp and I feel envigorated and ready for my day.
Wake up with a smile! September 21, 2009 Bookish (Devon) 72 out of 77 found this review helpful
I got this because I was fed up with being startled awake by the horrible bleeper on my clock radio, and I thought this might be an improvement. I was RIGHT! It's a lovely way to wake up in the morning and I'm convinced it must be making me happier in the mornings...
The idea behind this lamp is that it 'gently prepares your body for waking up during the last half hour of sleep', (according to the booklet that comes with it). The booklet also goes on to explain that the light in the morning affects the levels of cortisol, which is the hormone that makes us feel awake and alert. This lamp simulates real sunrise, and so has the same effect as a real dawn, apparently.
Well, that's the technical stuff anyway... All I know is that the lamp slowly lightens over a half hour period, until it reaches the maximum brightness (which can be as bright or as soft as you like because you set it via a dimmer dial) at the time you want to wake up. The light itself feels quite realistic: diffused and gentle, although very bright at its mazimum. It's a white light though, rather than yellow, which is softer and more pleasing to the groggy early morning eye....
You can also choose to have the lamp sound an alarm once it's reached maximum brightness. You can choose from a standard alarm sound; birdsong; African Jungle sounds; wind chimes, or simply your favourite radio station. I chose the birdsong because I thought it might confuse my waking brain if I suddenly found myself in an African jungle.
Once you wake up (which actually does seem to happen quite naturally as the light slowly increases), you can hit the 'snooze' button if you want, and although the lamp stays on, the alarm sound will repeat 9 minutes later.
It also works as an ordinary lamp and a radio, so you can use it in the normal way. The radio has a timer, so you can settle down to sleep while listening to the radio and it'll turn itself off after any period of time from between 15 minutes to 2 hours. You need to remember though that the volume that you use the night before is the same volume that will be used to wake you up in the morning, and the same applies to the lamp brightness.
I really do think this is a great lamp and it's a much better and kinder way to wake up, especially on dark winter mornings. The lamp is smart looking: pretty plain and inoffensive, nicely rounded and a soft white colour. It looks perfectly at home in my cottage-style bedroom, but would look equally good in a more contemporary room. The clock display is a very simple one: the time shows in glowing orange numbers at the base of the lamp, but again, in a pleasantly diffused way.
It's simple to operate and all the switches are easily to hand at the side of the clock. It uses wheels for adjustments, so that the light and volume are infintely adjustable, which I particularly like.
All in all, I would definitely recommend it, especially for people like me who find getting up difficult in winter.
Beats a traditional alarm clock any day! December 11, 2009 R. Flanagan (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I went out on a limb when I bought the Philips Wake-Up Light. As a student living in a room that gets little/no natural light in the mornings, I find getting up in the mornings a daunting task anyway. So with winter setting in and the writing on my alarm clock's snooze button almost entirely faded, I managed to justify to myself spending so much, and hoped to solve my morning blues.
The first thing I noticed about the Wake-Up Light was its compact size. It stands roughly nine inches tall, six inches wide and about five inches deep, and takes up a third of my (admittedly paltry) bedside table. Having replaced both my bedside light and alarmclock, it has freed a handy bit of room, so there's definately a plus point for those with limited space.
The asthetics of the Wake-Up Light are exactly what you would expect from a high-end Philips product. The lines are curved and pleasant to the eye, the orange LED display built into the front of the light is easy to understand and of a high quality. The little wheels controlling the settings at the side blend into the light rather well, all apart from the alarm/snooze button which is a rather shiny metal switch. This turns the alarm on and off, and when it does go off nudging it down will tigger snooze mode before it smartly returns to the 'on' setting of its own accord.
The alarm itself does exactly what it says on the box. It wakes you up slowly with a nice warm light (of which you can change the brightness) and the choice of either FM radio, birdsong, 'friendly' beeping, jungle noises or windchimes. I haven not yet hooked up the FM radio, however the collection of noises is interesting to say the least. The beeping sounds more like a track from a Carribean chill-out album, the jungle noise is basically a bongo with some animals in the background and the windchime option sounds like it was composed by Mike Oldfield. None of which I consider to be a bad thing, but I personally opted for the plain old birdsong.
To truelly nitpick, the only problem I have encountered with the Wake-Up Light is the slightly fiddly nature of the control buttons on the side. To edit the settings (time, alarm, etc) you press in one of the wheels, cycle through till you select the setting you want, rotate the wheel to set the particular time, then you have to press the wheel in again to confirm. Several times I have done this and nudged the wheel ever so slightly up or down as I press inwards, changing the setting by a hour. It is the slightest of things really, and seems more down to clumsyness than anything, however some people may find this fiddly.
That said, having used this product for almost a week, I have to admit I've already noticed a distinct change already. No longer am I rudely awakened by my morning alarm. No more do I wake up in darkness, miserably groping around for the snooze button trying to put an end to the incessant beeping. Instead, now I wake up to a nice warm glow and the sound of birdsong. I still like a lie in mind, but getting up in the morning is definately a lot easier. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product to anyone, particularly seen as at the moment of writing this review it is 40% off.
In short, if you find that waking up in the morning is the hardest part of your day, or if you sleep in a room that doesn't get much sunlight/birdsong/bongo music in the morning, I would definately recommend splashing out and buying this.
Bright idea. September 21, 2009 Guitar Heroine (Somewhere In England.) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
This rather minimalistic, space-age looking device is an alarm clock, FM radio and bedside lamp all rolled into one. It has been very well thought out. There are scroll buttons on the side for setting the timings and the intensities of both sound and light, and of course for choosing an FM radio station to listen to.
The alarm sounds are varied and there is something for everyone, from your favourite radio station, through to a stimulating start courtesy of an African drum, wind chimes, beeps, and birdsong. At your pre-set time in the morning...or evening if you're that way inclined, your chosen sound begins to emit softly, growing louder gradually until you press snooze or deactivate the alarm. The light also comes on, having gradually also been building up a manner similar to sunlight.
As a sufferer of seasonal affective disorder, winter is a time where due to lack of sunlight early in the morning, I'm often sluggish and lethargic and struggle to get out of bed; I really think that this will make a big difference to me when that dreaded time of year creeps in.
You can use this device as a radio, playing constantly, and also as a bedside lamp; it goes up to a light intensity of 20, although I was happy with the level of light given at the 12 level. You can even choose three different brightness settings for the small LED time display on the front of the unit.
Overall, a very useful and now essential piece of kit, although it is rather too plain looking for my liking. In fact, if I was to suggest any recommendation, other than wishing AM radio was available also, I'd love to be able to choose the colour, although then again, this would probably defeat the object of the light emissions, given that they're meant to resemble natural daylight.
wake-up light and radio, best present to myself December 9, 2009 baio (cambridge, uk) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Before buying it, I read all the reviews, thanks everybody, so I had a clear idea of what I was getting only to be pleasantly surprised... what I bought was much better than expected. Ok, the 3 controls on the right are not easy to learn at the first sight but they are clever! You find me a gadget with only 3 controls for all the functions they move. After (only) 10 days I could change the level of the volume for the radio being still almost asleep, not bad! What I don't understand is why most of the reviewers don't try to adapt the work of art Philips created to their own use, the light is very good for reading if it is a little behind you shoulder, this way you don't see it, it doesn't blind your eyes but it gives you a diffuse and strong light from a side, perfect for reading. The size of the thing can't be more appropriate and it has rubber little feet so you don't push it over by accident, very well balanced. I only listen to classical music in my awakening state, radio 3, I can't bear news or pop music, but changing station is not more difficult than the old analogue models, it's easier because it goes only for the FM stations available in that locations. Dab radios are much better at that but they don't give you the impression that the day waiting for you is sunny and warm, even if it is a lie, most of the time. The quality of the loudspeaker is very good, much better that my pure dab siesta. It's a five well deserved star rate.
